New Zealand slowed as Tom Blundell and Mitchell came together again, neither seemed sure of whether to take the attack to England. It took another error, Blundell falling for the leg trap, to change the mood. Broad signalled to the dressing room, Blundell clearly the victim of a preconceived plan.

England stuck to the short ball, Bracewell took it on, hooking Broad for six but chipped a catch off Potts to mid on, mistiming a slog but, at least, his 25 off 17 upped the tempo.

One more poor run out, Mitchell selling Southee short to compound his match so far, swung the day England’s way. They have not shown an ounce of self-doubt so far in this match, despite New Zealand's 553 first innings score, so expect only one approach on Tuesday.
