In their last game of the ongoing AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, India will face Hong Kong at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The Blue Tigers will be looking to seal a victory and top the group with a win on Tuesday (June 14).

Ahead of the big game, India were given a major boost as their place in the next year's Asian Cup was confirmed after Palestine defeated Philippines. As the five-best second place team's alongside all group winners will qualify for the continental showpiece event, both India and Hong Kong are guaranteed a place in the tournament next year. This is the first time in history that the Blue Tigers have qualified for two successive editions of the Asian Cup.

Both India and Hong Kong come into the game with two wins in as many games. The hosts beat Cambodia in their opening match with a brace from Sunil Chhetri. They followed it up with a dramatic victory over Afghanistan that saw an injury time winner from Sahal Abdul Samad. Earlier, Chhetri gave India the lead in the 86th minute with a stunning free-kick but Afghanistan equalised after two minutes from a corner kick.

Both teams will be looking to finish the campaign on a high and finish as the group toppers. With China giving up their rights to host the tournament, it is not yet known when or where the 2023 Asian Cup will take place

Given the situation, India needs a win to secure the top spot and ensure its passage to Asian Cup 2023 final stage. There are some spots reserved for the best second finishers but Indian head coach Igor Stimac preferred his team to be taking the straight-forward route.

“We play to win tomorrow and qualify on merit. I don’t want to get into the complexities of mathematical calculations as it does not help in the end,” Stimac said on the eve of the match.
